Closeup of patient smiling with blue bracesSince metal braces have been one of the most popular teeth-straightening treatments for decades, there are several facts that are widely known about them. For example, many patients are aware that they can address a wide range of orthodontic issues and that the average treatment timeline is between 18 and 24 months. But what else do you know about traditional orthodontics? Let’s see if you know these four fun facts about braces!

#1. Braces Are Almost 300 Years Old

That’s right! Pierre Fauchard was credited with the invention of braces back in 1728. At the time, he expanded the palate by using a horseshoe-shaped piece of iron. Fortunately, the field of orthodontics has advanced significantly in the last 300 years, making treatments much more comfortable and reliable.

#2. We Have NASA to Thank for Modern Braces

When NASA created a heat-resistant material for spaceships, they didn’t realize it would be perfect for orthodontic treatment too! Since it’s both incredibly durable and able to maintain its shape when bent, they stumbled upon what is now a pillar of modern orthodontics. (Plus, they designed the innovative material used for clear braces too!).

#3. Braces Can Do More Than Just Straighten Teeth

All too often, patients dismiss braces as nothing more than a teeth-straightening treatment. In reality, the metal brackets and wires can do so much more! Most notably, they can correct bite issues, like overbites and underbites. This may seem like a small feat, but it can lead to several positive outcomes, including improved chewing and speaking patterns.

#4. Braces Don’t Set Off Metal Detectors

A common myth about braces is that they have the ability to set off metal detectors. However, they aren’t magnetic, so you don’t need to worry about your orthodontic treatment creating a scene the next time you’re at the airport. (They don’t pick up radio transmissions or increase your risk of being struck by lightning either!).

After reading through the above fun facts, you now know quite a bit more about braces! If you have a question about orthodontic treatment, don’t hesitate to get in touch with your orthodontist.
